England defeats South Africa by nine wickets in Southampton

England, defeated by Pakistan in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy last week, successfully chased down a target of 143 runs in the first of three Twenty20 meetings with the Proteas.

Despite the best efforts of AB de Villiers and Farhaan Behardien , who put together a 110-run stand, South Africa could only manage 142-3 at the Rose Bowl.

The hosts made light work of their opponents, as Jonny Bairstow (60*) and Alex Hales (47*) guided their side to victory with 33 deliveries to spare.

The second match takes place in Taunton on Friday evening.
