The former Newcastle United midfielder Tiote, who is playing for China League One side Beijing BG, collapsed during a training session on Monday and was taken to hospital, where he passed away after emergency treatment.
“At 6pm on June 5, Cheick Tiote fell unconscious to the ground during training,” read Beijing Enterprises’ statement.
“He was immediately taken to hospital but unfortunately died at 7pm on June 5. We have informed his relatives of his death.
“After joining Beijing Enterprises on February 5, 2017, Tiote made great contributions to the club and received plaudits for his superb skills and professionalism from coaching staff and team-mates.
“We hereby express our sincere condolences for Tiote’s unfortunate death.”
Tioté won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast national team where he made just 22 appearances for the National team.
He made his professional debut for Anderlecht in 2005 before moving to FC Twente three years later.
The defensive midfielder then secured a £3.5million switch to Newcastle in 2010.
He remained at the Magpies for seven years – his sole Premier League goal coming in the 4-4 draw against Arsenal in February 2011.
