Andy Murray sees off John Isner in straight sets at quarter-final stage of Erste Bank Open

The British number one Murray triumphed 6-1 6-3 in Austria to remain hot on the heels of Novak Djokovic , whose world number one ranking is now under real threat heading into the closing stages of the season.

The three-time Grand Slam champion eased ahead in the match, holding his serve throughout the opening set and breaking three of Isner’s service games to grab a big foothold which he would not relinquish.

Isner again failed to break the Brit in the second set, with the only loss of serve coming in the second game – Murray taking that with his second break point and pushing on to comfortably progress through.

Should Murray, who will now face David Ferrer for a place in the final, win this tournament and the Paris Masters, Djokovic would need to reach the Paris final to retain his position as world number one.
