Former Barcelona forward Rivaldo believes the dismissal of coach Ernesto Valverde was handled clumsily by the Catalan club and says Quique Setien will be easy to sack if things do not go well at Camp Nou.

Valverde was dismissed by Barca on Monday after negotiations at the weekend with former midfielder Xavi Hernandez emerged and Setien was appointed as his successor in a two-and-a-half-year deal.

“At the end of the day, it’s never a good thing to be negotiating with a new coach while the current one is still working for you.”

Rivaldo went on to say that he thought Barca had only appointed Setien because they were left with little option after talks with Xavi had come to light.

“I think Barca have hired Setien because, having unsuccessfully gone after Xavi and [Ronald] Koeman, there was no going back on sacking Valverde,” he said. “It wouldn’t have made sense to keep on Valverde after all that, so they had to go with their third choice.”

“It wouldn’t be a big problem if Barcelona have to change coach again.”

Rivaldo is also sure that Xavi, his former team-mate at Barca, will coach the Catalan club in future.

“I’m convinced that Xavi will sign as coach of Barcelona in future and he is already preparing for it,” the World Cup winner said.

“I believe he rejected Barca’s offer because he is not ready to assume the role at this early stage of his new job as a coach.” The home for trending sports news.
