Fernando Torres sign one-year contract extension with Atletico Madrid

Fernando Torres was out of contract in Atletico Madrid this summer and recently tipped to move abroad, being linked with a lucrative move to Mexican side Queretaro.

The 33-year-old has turned down lofty wages to instead remain with Atletico for the new season, however, as the Rojiblancos – under a transfer ban until January that prohibits the registering of new players – prepare to move into their new 68,000-capacity Wanda Metropolitano home.

In a brief statement on Atletico’s official website, the Spain international said: “I am very happy to continue one more year together.”

Former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Torres has found the net 28 times since returning to Atleti in 2016, but now finds himself behind Kevin Gameiro and Antoine Greizmann in the pecking order.
