Liverpool host Arsenal in a mouthwatering Premier League match at Anfield today with the Reds’ manager Jurgen Klopp on the opposite sides with his former Borussia Dortmund striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who has been in terrific form for the Gunners.
Liverpool and Arsenal are the only two sides yet to drop any point, home and away, in the new Premier League season. However, points must be dropped today with either a draw result or a win for either side.
Klopp will be concerned about how his team will stop a forward he described as a ‘Goal Machine’ in order to maintain their 10 per cent run in the new campaign. Aubameyang has netted 43 goals from 67 matches in all completions for Arsenal.
The German tactician who coached Aubameyang for two seasons at Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund before joining Liverpool in 2015 knows what makes the Gabon international’s form tick.
“Auba has actually no real weaknesses apart from his fashion style. I’m really glad it has worked out well for him, because I really like him,” Klopp told reporters ahead of the Anfield showdown.
“I didn’t think about the Premier League when I signed him for Dortmund. He played as
a winger at Saint-Etienne at that time, we needed a number nine because Lewandowski left us. We thought long about it, then he came in and played on the wing
and we played with Immobile as well.
“Later on we realised he is a really good central striker, a number nine, as well. It was not immediate like this, he developed incredibly and became a goal machine.”
Klopp added: “I have to say his finishing is incredible. Combine that with the speed and it is really
“He plays now on the wing in a 4-2-3-1, which means he has to defend and he is ready to do that. He is really a good player.”
